The Portimão area was once one of Portugal’s largest centres of the canning industry, with more than 40 factories operating at its peak. This route is an invitation to immerse yourself in this rich and living heritage while discovering the authentic flavours of a region shaped by the sea and centuries of tradition.

The experience begins at the only canning factory still operating in the Municipality of Lagoa, where visitors can observe the artisanal production process and sample premium-quality preserves — a living testament to a craft that has stood the test of time.

The journey then continues to the Portimão Municipal Market, where fresh fish arrives directly from the local fish auction. Accompanied by an expert guide, participants will discover the wide variety of species displayed on the stalls, alongside fresh regional produce and traditional Algarve sweets — a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

A visit to the Portimão Museum reveals the legacy of the canning industry through tools, machinery, and installations that have spanned generations, telling the story of the people whose lives were intertwined with the sea and the production of preserves.

The route concludes with a tradition that is both simple and symbolic: following the same path once taken by local residents as they carried their purchases home in an alcofa — the traditional handwoven basket that remains an enduring symbol of everyday life in the Algarve.

An experience that weaves together culture, gastronomy, and local commerce, connecting participants with the Algarve’s fishing and canning heritage.

Free admission. Limited capacity. Advance registration required.
