Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a hat and water.

Join this guided tour of Vila Real de Santo António and discover its foundation as part of the Algarve’s post-1755 earthquake recovery project, as well as the enduring relationship this border city has maintained with the world of smuggling.

The tour begins by the river — the source of the city’s identity and development — where participants gain insight into the urban planning principles behind its creation and the decisive influence of its strategic position on the Portuguese-Spanish border.

From there, we explore the historic centre, renowned for its distinctive Pombaline layout, uncovering the stories of the people who have long called these streets home. Fishermen, workers from the canning factories, and their daily struggles all form part of the city's social fabric. Running through every era is another constant presence: smuggling, an activity that has been intertwined with Vila Real de Santo António since its very foundation.

Through its streets, architecture, and stories, this experience reveals the economic, social, and cultural forces that shaped one of the Algarve’s most unique border towns.

Free admission. Limited capacity. Advance registration required.
Each participant may register for only one tour. Registration is open until 10pm on June 22.
